CPAP devices and their accessories are easy to clean, maintain and travel with if you follow some basic guidelines.

CPAP Systems

VitalAire supplies CPAP systems manufactured by Philips Respironics, Weinmann and APEX. All systems operate on the same principal and offer three basic components – a CPAP device, an air tube and a mask. Differences between systems involve treatment algorithms, mask styles and fit, remote connectivity and other usability features.

Masks

Worn while you sleep, CPAP masks use a strap or straps, to hold its soft cushion snugly against your face. A variety of configurations include nasal pillows, which rest against your nostrils; nasal masks, which cover the nose and full-face masks that cover nose and mouth. Each mask has its own configuration of straps. You can mix and match masks or devices so visit our branch to experience the different products before committing yourself.

Hygiene and comfort accessories

Types of hygiene and comfort accessories for CPAP devices include:

  • A heated humidifier that warms and moistens the air to help prevent a dry throat or nose.
  • Wire tubing to provide high humidity.
  • CPAP pillows with cut-away sections so you can roll onto your side without the mask bumping the pillow.
  • Replacement parts such as cushions, headgear, straps, hoses and filters.
  • Chin straps, or chin restraints to hold your mouth closed. This prevents the dry mouth some CPAP users experience.
  • Hypoallergenic filters to clean the air you breathe.

Maintain your CPAP devices, masks and accessories

Each manufacturer has specific cleaning guidelines for their devices, masks and accessories – particularly the cushion between the mask and the face, which can be quite fragile. These basic guidelines are typical to all devices.

  1. Wipe the external surfaces with a cloth dampened in soapy water.
  2. The humidifier, where fitted, should be dried daily and cleaned weekly with warm soapy water.
  3. The mask should be disassembled and washed every day. Be gentle and carefully remove any facial oils from the cushion. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
  4. Any washable air filters should be cleaned and dried weekly. Disposable filters must be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. The headgear – the straps that hold your mask on should be cleaned weekly, or when needed.
  6. Ensure that the CPAP device, filters, air supply pipe, mask and accessories are dry before you use them again.

Travelling with your CPAP device

Plan ahead to facilitate easy travels with your CPAP device.

  • Moving your CPAP device: Always remove the humidifier chamber before moving your CPAP device even if it appears to be empty, to prevent water getting inside the device.
  • Do not power your CPAP device with a standard car battery, or an outlet in your car. This will flatten the battery before morning.
  • If you use oxygen as part of your therapy, do not power your CPAP device from a battery, as a spark from the battery terminals could create a fire hazard.

Travelling overseas with your CPAP device

  • Most CPAP devices can be used worldwide (110V to 250V) with the correct plug adapter.
  • Most aeroplane sockets are 110V and use a US-style plug.
  • Most airlines will treat your CPAP device as medical equipment and allow you to take it on board in addition to your regular carry-on luggage quota.
  • Not all airlines allow you to use your CPAP device in flight so check with your airline carrier before departure.
  • Carry a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s letter when you fly.
  • Many overseas travellers with a CPAP device take a universal adapter and extension cord with them in case their hotel does not have a spare power outlet close to the bed.
